| Professionals love to be challenged. So when Dru Rafkin Jackman, ACC, Certified Professional Development Coach, challenged FAyPers at our March luncheon to overcome our Monkey Minds, the response was focused and unanimous — “Dru, what the ?&!# are you talking about?”
It turns out that each of our brains is burdened with a tantrum throwing, pre-adolescent, snot-nosed punk portion called the amygdala that rises up to derail us just as we begin to take on new challenges or to pursue some creative bent. Dru calls this brain brat the “Monkey Mind”. Maybe it’s because nobody else can pronounce ‘amygdala’. Dru gave familiar and humorous (okay, slightly embarrassing) examples of succumbing to the Monkey Mind and none of us could claim innocence. How about casting blame when you run into difficulty? Monkey Mind. How about being vague in your commitments? Monkey Mind. How about putting off paying your FAyP dues? Monkey Mind. How about hanging from the rafters and screeching at the top of your lungs? Okay, that’s actually perilously close to Monkey Behavior and you should probably seek counseling. Nevertheless, we peppered poor Dru with numerous questions, intrigued at the thought that we can truly overcome Monkey Mind and do the things we’ve been telling ourselves we want to do in life. Write that book! Build that scale model of a ’76 Gremlin! Pay those FAyP dues! These are just random examples. If you missed the luncheon, hopefully you found somewhere else to eat, but you may lie awake in the middle of the night wondering, “What is the solution to Monkey Mind?”, solutions Dru shared with us during the luncheon. So, contact Dru! Probably best to email her, especially since you’re lying awake in the middle of the night and it’s not an appropriate time to call. Dru has plenty of free info and is happy to share. Just email her at info@solutionsbydru.com. Do it right away. Don’t say, “I’ll get to it,” or, “Maybe tomorrow.” Come on. Put down the banana. That’s Monkey Mind. One last thing. A couple of people have asked so its pertinent to mention here. While Dru is very talented and committed as a coach and consultant, unfortunately she cannot help you with your Monkey Ears. I suggest an ‘over-the-ear’ cut. Maybe something that goes well with your ’76 Gremlin. |
